1)Mufti Muhammad Sayeed, the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, died on 7 January 2016 morning at AIIMS in New Delhi. Born on January 12, 1936 in south Kashmir’s Bijbehara town, Mr. Sayeed comes from the clergy family of Jammu and Kashmir called the peers.He studied Arabic and law at Aligrah Muslim University and by 1959 he had started practicing the law in his home district, Anantnag. He joined the Congress in late 1960s, then moved to V.P. Singh’s Jan Morcha which chose him as Home Minister in 1990. He then rejoined the Congress but left again and founded PDP in 1999.
2)Assams herbal medicine expert Gunaram Khanikar dies at 69 Gunaram Khanikar, Assam’s noted traditional herbal medicine expert whose medicine is said to have cured over three lakh patients of different ailments ranging from diabetes to cancer, passed away early Thursday morning following a massive heart attack. A bachelor, Khanikar was 69. His birthday – March 22 – has been observed as Medicinal Plants Day in Assam for the past 10 years.
3)The Rajasthan Government on 7 January 2016 signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Cairn Enterprise Centre Society, supported by oil and gas exploration company Cairn India. The MoU aims at providing clean drinking water in Barmer district. As per the agreement, water plants will be established and maintained to provide clean drinking water to more than 800 villages in Barmer, a part of the Thar Desert where drinking water is a precious commodity.
4)Adding to Indian Navy's firepower, INS Kadmatt, the second ship of Project 28 (P28) class anti-submarine warfare (ASW) corvettes, was commissioned on 7 January 2016 Thursday. INS Kadmatt has been indigenously designed by Indian Navy's in-house organisation, Directorate of Naval Design and constructed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited, Kolkata. The ships of P28 class have been constructed using high grade steel (DMR 249A) produced in India. With a displacement of 3300 tonnes, the sleek and magnificent ship spans 109 meters in length and 13.7 meters at the beam and is propelled by four diesel engines to achieve speeds in excess of 25 knots with an endurance of 3450 Nm.
5)Union Cabinet on 6 January 2016 approved creation of a Credit Guarantee Fund for Micro Units Development Refinance Agency (MUDRA) loans. lakh crore rupees worth of loans to micro and small units in the first instance.The cabinet also approved to convert MUDRA Ltd. into MUDRA Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) Bank as a wholly owned subsidiary of SIDBI.
6)Arogya Keralam scheme to benefit 42 lakh families The kerala state cabinet has decided to launch a Sampoorna Arogya Keralam project that would benefit around 42 lakh families with annual incomes below Rs 3 lakh, said chief minister Oommen Chandy here on 6 January 2016.The government will form a corpus fund of Rs 20 crore towards this.A trust headed by the chief minister will monitor the scheme under which a beneficiary could get financial aid of up to Rs 2 lakh.
